Artists in the studio in East London

Inspiration / Background

My paintings serve as a visual diary, capturing daily experiences and gathering diverse fragments from the world that surrounds me. I draw continuous inspiration from nature, observing and immersing myself in everything I see, hear, and feel, capturing the sensual moments of the present.

I am fascinated by the details such as the interplay of colours, textures, and the ever-shifting light and shadows in both natural landscapes and urban environments. Growing up in the tranquil Lithuanian countryside, I was fortunate to experience simple pleasures like walking barefoot in the warmth of summer, swimming in wild, immersing myself in the sounds of nature, or gazing at the stars beneath the expansive night sky. My deep-rooted connection to Lithuanian heritage undoubtedly shapes my artistic palette, steering me towards the vibrant hues of green and blue in my artworks.

Artistic Process / Shaped Canvases

I love experimenting with various textures in my artwork. To begin a painting, I apply delicate pigment washes on a blank canvas, layering them with rich coats of oil paint. I often introduce such elements like sand and wax, and at times, I incorporate embroidery collages. This results in paintings being intricate and multi-layered, adding depth and complexity to my work.

In my latest practice, I experiment with different canvas shapes and their compositions. Creating uniquely shaped canvases from scratch has given me the freedom to express myself and develope my artistic journey.

I find great pleasure in how these unconventional shapes become guides to my painting. These canvases have no precise rectangular boundaries, and as a result, they appear to be in a perpetual state of flux and transformation. They expand outwards and flow into the surrounding space, and in turn, the environment around them seems to become a part of the canvas itself.
