Stretching Shaped Canvas
A brief video documents the process of stretching a shaped canvas. The development of each work, from constructing the frame to preparing the surface for painting, is time-intensive and grounded in a hands-on approach to making.
The process begins with sketches of different shapes on paper, exploring compositions until a resolved form is established. Once the design is finalised, the frame is constructed using timber sourced from a local supplier and canvas from an art materials shop.
The timber is measured, cut, and assembled according to the drawing using wood glue and staples. Additional internal supports are added to reinforce the structure. After drying, the frame is carefully sanded to ensure a smooth, even surface.
The canvas is then measured, cut to shape, and stretched over the frame using pliers and a staple gun. Particular attention is given to maintaining even tension across the surface to avoid distortion.
The preparation continues with multiple layers of adhesive and primer, applied gradually with drying time between each stage. The surface is sanded between layers to create a stable and refined ground for painting.
