“Thin As Paper - Rough As Rock” is a large-scale painting whose title refers to the tactile qualities of silver birch bark-paper-thin, fragile layers alongside deep, rugged grooves shaped over time by growth and exposure to the elements.
The work explores the relationship between human touch and natural forms through an expanded approach to painting that integrates traditional materials with elements sourced from the forest. Inspired by the textures and patterns of birch bark, it combines gestural oil paint, frottage techniques, and found branches that extend beyond the canvas. Irregular wooden forms attached to the surface blur the boundary between painting and object, reflecting a meeting point between organic structures and artistic gesture.
