“Transformative Matter” is a multi-layered artwork that explores materiality through experimental processes. The upper layer is formed from a repurposed frame, reshaped and finished with pigment and marble dust to create a weathered, organic surface. Beneath it, handmade recycled paper is built into a dense, textured layer, partially covered with natural rust and partially developed with pigment and oil paint. A final cut-out plywood layer is treated with oil paint, marble dust and wax, adding depth and tactile variation. The work is entirely hand-made, emphasising a close engagement with process.

The piece draws on observations of the River Thames, including tidal marks, rusted structures and traces of decay. These references inform themes of temporality, transformation and continual change.

By removing the original canvas and reshaping the frame into an organic, rib-like form, the work reflects a transition from ending to renewal. Composed of wood-based materials, it extends the language of painting beyond its conventional limits, embracing material change, instability and intuitive making.
